The use of floorcloths dates back to the 17th century as an alternative to leaving wooden floors bare or covering them with expensive carpets or rugs. Some of our ancestors opted for a simpler less expensive decorative choice. The original floorcloths were very simple and utilitarian in their design and were rough pieces of painted or stenciled canvas. They would be found in kitchens, hallways, entries and porches because they were easily cleaned and would brighten up otherwise drab areas of the house. As time went on they became more elaborate, but, were still valued for their resilience to wear-and-tear. The cloths you see here can be used on the floor or on a table, and are completely hand-painted.
With normal use and a little care, this floorcloth will last a good long time.
